Eating Healthy For A Healthier Life
By Jordan Finch
Good nutrition doesn’t mean staying on a strict diet or constantly striving to lose weight. Although those who eat for good nutrition often lose weight in the process, the primary focus of good nutrition is health and feeling great. Introducing better nutrition into your daily meal plans is often as easy as learning a few “eat smart” tips.
The benefits of good nutrition are manifold, from lowering your chances of heart problems, reducing the instances of cancerous cells, a sharper mind, better retention, and an increase in positivity, all of which will improve your life.
Moderation is often the key to better nutrition. Instead of prohibiting certain foods, reduce your consumption of unhealthy foods while adding healthier foods to your daily diet.
Portion control is also important for better nutrition. Just as in moderation with food types, moderation with the amount of food consumed is important. Familiarize yourself with standard food portions so that you know what they look like.
You need to maintain a strict focus and keep to your healthy eating patterns. It may help to try and change your eating habits with another person so you can help motivate each other and be there to offer encouragement when it is need. This will help you to achieve your objectives.
Make sure that you get as fresh a produce as possible. Also, try to eat at least 4 to 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day as this is the recommended minimum.
Fruit looks and tastes great, and they are an excellent product to snack on when you get those hunger attacks. Surprisingly, they can fill you up pretty quick. You should also make a point to consume fiber and good carbohydrates, which can usually be found in whole grains.
Stay away from processed items and any food that has a lot of salt, sugar, or fats, as these are all bad for you. The best idea is to cook for yourself as often as possible and to make a meal schedule, rather than eating out. The great thing is that not only is this not too hard to do but way cheaper too.

Establish Trust And Confidence In Your Child By Getting To Know Their Peers
By Thomas Telder
Childhood friendships can sometimes last a lifetime. Knowing how to relate to others and which people will a have a positive impact on their lives is something children rely on their parents to teach them. One way parents can do this is by hosting play dates at their homes.
The play dates will enable you to see how your child and his friends get along in different settings and respond to family members. Get to know their friend’s parents and what they’re like. This will help you understand their family dynamics.
Make a concentrated effort to teach your child the values that are important to you and how to find peers with the same perspective. Once your child knows what morals you hold dear, help them to make decisions in accordance with those values.
Let me illustrate this with an example from my own life. My daughter came to me one day with a problem concerning her new friend. She was distressed because her friend wanted her to lie to me about an upcoming trip they were going on. My daughter said she didn’t want to lie to me but her friend was pressuring her and telling her what to say.
I was proud that my daughter felt she could confide in me and I took the opportunity to reinforce the values I hold dear, such as honesty and responsibility. We discussed the situation and what makes a person a good friend.
I was gratified to learn that she had decided to end the friendship. She said she didn’t want a friend who would make such demands on her and put her in an awkward position.
It’s important to acknowledge that not all children are the same. Some are comfortable in a crowd and make friends easily. Others prefer to have just a few close companions. Embrace their differences.
Take note of how your children respond to their friends and help them develop relationships that are appropriate for them.

What To Measure When Purchasing Jeans Online
By Sarah Harden
Have you ever thought of purchasing jeans online? Many people have not, because they are used to trying on the jeans and checking fit in the mirror. This is of course impossible when purchasing online. But, if you have a tape measure and take five important measurements, you can buy online and be confident that your jeans will fit.
Get your measuring tape, and grab a willing friend if possible. A second pair of hands makes the process much easier. When you take measurements, hold the tape measure slightly loose but not so loose it is slipping.
1. Upper waist. First, loop the tape around the smallest part of your waist. It will likely be higher than where your jeans will actually sit. Although your waist measurement will not be where your jeans waist will sit, it is still used to determine the size of the waist on the jeans. If you take the measurement at the actual point where the jeans will hit, your waistband will probably be too loose.
2. Lower waist: Take this measurement just below the pointy part of the hip. If you cannot figure out where to measure, imagine a halfway point between where high-rise and low-rise jeans fit and measure at that point.
3. Bottom width: For most women, figure that this is going to be a few inches bigger than the waist measurement. Use the tape to measure around yourself at the widest point of your hips.
4. Thigh width: Take this measurement around the widest part of the thigh.
5. Inseam length: Take a pair of jeans that fits beautifully, and lay them out flat. Starting at the crotch seam, measure down the inside of the leg to the bottom of the cuff.
Now you are ready to buy the jeans. Once you are on the jeans site, add an inch to each of the measurements provided on the site as guidelines for what size to purchase.
Sizing should be fairly easy to figure out. Different countries use different sizing schemes, but in general if you know the country of origin for the jeans, you can figure out which sizing they will be using. Jeans made in the United States will probably use US sizing, and so on.

Low-Income Areas Lean Towards Fast Food
By Sheila Mathews
We have all seen the documentaries about fast food restaurants on low-income areas and how they cause the residents in the area to become obese. The simple fact that the restaurant is there is very bad for the residents.
For the most part, poor men and women do not have many choices when it comes to food that they can afford. They also tend to go to restaurants that are close by. For these people that one dollar fat-filled hamburger looks like a great opportunity and the people eat as many as they can afford. These are terrible in calorie quantity and very bad for their health.
In fact, it hasn’t just been one documentary done on this story. There has been an ample amount of involvement. New York’s Area Council got involved and made new labeling laws that it hoped would help gain people’s awareness of this problem.
Even with the new laws things haven’t changed. According to a recent survey New York’s poor people are still victims of a terrible diet in their low-income neighborhoods.
Companies such as McDonalds and KFC seem to think that this is wrongful information however and report that men and women are ordering food that is lower in fat and calories. This makes no sense. How could they have such different information than the independent survey?
One way to look at it is that chains like Subway sell healthier low cost sandwiches and lots of them and those figures are being considered in the survey of the more unhealthy chains like McDonalds and KFC. This throws a wrench in the figures.
In all reality thins is misrepresentation of facts that could end up being deadly. The studies by the metropolis are looking at what occurs in wealthier neighborhoods where the people can afford and tend to get their fast food at restaurants like Subway. They are using this information to pad’ the numbers in the poorer neighborhoods.
Basically the City’s report is of no use. People in poor neighborhoods are continuing to the exact same thigh they were in the first place.

Make Retiring A Pleasure By Planning Ahead
By Mig Granada
We think of retirement as a relaxing time when we can do exactly as we please. For many Americans, though, the transition to retirement is challenging we’re not used to that much time, we’ve spent most of our adult lives at work!
Suddenly you have tons of free time, but if you haven’t prepared adequately before retirement you may not have the ability to enjoy it as you had dreamed. To make the most of your future retirement, follow these tips:
Plan your time and money. If you don’t, you may find that once you are retired you have no idea what to do with yourself.
This is especially important for all of you workaholics out there. If work has been your life so far, you need to find some hobbies and interests so that when work is no longer taking up your time you still have something to do. You don’t want to save money and have time, and not know what to do. Your friends may still be working, or be unavailable; you need to know how to entertain yourself.
Know what you have. If you ask a room full of people who are considering retirement whether they will be able to afford to retire soon, most of them will tell you that they have no idea.
You won’t be able to accurately plan for and save for retirement unless you know what you have on hand. You will need to know whether you have enough money to retire they way you want to.
Rethink insurance coverage. So long as you have sufficient assets to pay your bills, and you aren’t working, there is no reason to carry insurance to help you if you lose a job. It makes no sense. You’ll need to decide whether to increase your liability insurance though, since you’ll be living off of your assets for an extended period.
Choose your lifestyle now. Once you are into retirement, you may find that you spend a great deal of money on medical care. This can mean that your choices dwindle, if you haven’t pre-prepared. Decide now if you want to stay in your home, go to a retirement community, or so on and make plans for this.

Why Giving The Kitchen A Facelift Makes Sense
By Edith Grover
Think about your home. Where do you spend the most time? Be realistic and truthful. You might wish you could spend more time in your room getting more sleep. That’s probably not what’s happening though.
Kids likely think they spend most of their time near the television or video games, in the family room.
If you really look at how you use the rooms in your home, though, you’ll probably realize that your kitchen is the most commonly used room in your home.
Consider how many times during the course of the day you end up in the kitchen. When you wake up, you go into the kitchen to get breakfast. You’ll return for lunch and for snacks, or else pack lunch and snacks for taking to work or school, in the kitchen.
After your day at school or work, you’ll return home and need to make dinner. You are going to spend time prepping for this meal. Your family may come in and spend time with you while you cook. Some families even eat together in the kitchen as well. You make desserts and treats for special occasions in your kitchen as well.
Now, some people love their kitchens. They feel they have enough space to do what they need to do and enough storage, and it is the perfect kitchen for them. Most people do not love their kitchens, though. Many people dread making dinner because it is an ordeal, there is insufficient space. Others are embarrassed at the thought of having someone come over and see their kitchen.
It can feel like an unsolvable problem. You have a small space, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to fix t his. You might be surprised to find that there are remodeling solutions for just about any kitchen, to solve just about any issue.
Give some thought to remodeling your kitchen. You spend the majority of your time in this room. Since there are so many options available, why not consider having renovations done? If you will be spending so much time in this room, it really should be attractive and useful.

Movie Theater Quality Sound At Home
By Owen Jones
Do you love going to the movie theater and get lost in the realism that their superior sound systems create? If you do, then I bet you are also one of those people who dislikes going there, only to have a potentially fantastic evening ruined by irresponsible people talking through the film or letting their cell phones ring.
I used to love the movie theater, but that was in the time when people respected the rights of others to listen to a movie in silence. There were no crying babies, ringing mobile phones or noisy youths in movie theaters and if they got in they were soon kicked out if there was any noise.
Nowadays, cinema managers appear to take the easy route of letting these people spoil it for others. As a result, more and more quiet people are staying at home and the cinemas are getting even noisier. If you are one of the stay-at-homes, but miss the cinema, why not reproduce one in your home?
Build yourself a home cinema with surround sound. You will never be sorry for installing surround sound in your home, because you will be able to play your favourite films, the TV and your music through it. The distinction between surround sound and stereo or even quadraphonics is breath-taking.
Different people have different desires, aspirations, finances and even hearing ability, so it is tricky to recommend a system to a mass audience, but there are strategies for going about the purchase of your own home theater system. A lot of people buy a kit home theater. This is fine, if funds are limited, but you will want to upgrade the screen and the speakers before very long. If you just want to put a home theater in a small spare bedroom and do it quickly and easily, then this approach is for you.
If, however, you want a bit more, then you might prefer to get a bigger screen but make do with the speakers that came with the kit. These can easily be upgraded later. If you want to get everything part by part, you will need a screen, speakers and DVD player. If you would like to play games too, replace the DVD player with an Xbox.
But back to the speakers, whether you are renewing or putting your own system together, the strategy I suggest hold true. Write down the dimensions of your room or better still do a little plan of it to scale. Take this around the shops and malls and try to listen to a few installations in a room similar to your own. This could be difficult, but you might be lucky.
Decide whether you need a 3.1; 4.1; 5.1; 6.1 or even 7.1 set of compatible surround sound speakers. Basically, it all depends on the size of your room, but the shop assistant will be able to demonstrate and advise you. As a guideline, a 5.1 surround sound set will be sufficient for most rooms. The figures stand for normal speakers and sub-woofers: ie 5.1 means five normal speakers and one sub-woofer.
The arrangement of the speakers depends on the size and shape of the room and on your personal preference, but the standard layout would be: one speaker the far left and far right of the screen and one underneath it with two more speakers slightly apart from each other at the back of the audience. The sub-woofer can go at the front or the rear.

Establishing Your Solar Panels For Domestic Energy
By Rocky Vasquez
If you need to learn a technique to economize and generate clean energy for your house, then building your own free solar energy system is the way to go. Although building the system isn’t free, the energy that you produce from it is going to be after you have recovered your initial investment. How much will that 1st investment be and how long will it take to recover it? That will rely upon a few things.
How much energy will your panels produce?
The rate at which you may recover your initial investment will depend on how much energy your solar panels produce and how much cash you save on your electricity bill. This may be worked out quite easily, but first you will want to test if you live in an area that is going to benefit seriously from solar energy. If you Google the US solar radiation map, you will find out precisely how many hours of direct daylight your area will receive. After you know this, you will want to fix on the size of your panels and how swiftly you wish to build them.
What’s the primary investment?
For many people the idea of laying out a pair thousand bucks is just too much to consider. Though the savings are virtually instantaneous, it is still lots of money to invest, particularly during tricky commercial times. The advantage of building your own panels is you can build them as the finances permit and use the savings from your electricity bill to put towards further panels. By building your solar system up steadily, you’re able to spend less and benefit more.
How difficult are they to build
Building solar panels is really very easy. If you’re a hobbyist who likes to work with your hands, then you will find this project extremely straightforward. The instruction manuals that are found online are written with a cut and paste formula which guides you through each step and in the event that you find yourself in a hard situation, there’s online support to help you through.

Exercise: The Best Medicine For Your Aging Brain
By Theanna Zika
Isn’t it ironic? You’re in your car waiting to pull through the drive through window at your local Walgreens and what are you there to get? Weight loss medicine? Pills for high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Yes, there are some percentage of people who have an injury or are handicapped and walking into the pharmacy to pick up their medication is difficult. However, a large percentage of people who are waiting in the drive through line are just being lazy.
As the owner of a home care agency who deals (primarily) with the elderly, I have a front row seat to see what is happening to our minds and bodies as we age. And I keep up with the research. I wonder how many of these same people would still be going through the drive thru’s if they knew what I know and could see what I see on a daily basis.
The debate is all but over. The number 1 most important thing we can do for our brains as we age is to be active and exercise. There have been a few studies that have come out recently that have shown the subjects who got regular exercise showed improvement in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Why is this noteworthy? Because the data shows about 15% of those with MCI are likely to develop Alzheimer’s. That’s why when the data shows that older adults who stay active have almost a 40% reduction in getting MCI, it’s important to pay attention. It’s become quite evident that we have to focus on prevention when it comes to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and take action against them as early as possible.
When someone is exposed to long term physical and mental stress, they suffer from something called oxidative stress. And suffering from oxidative stress makes the brain more susceptible to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia and Parkinson’s.
You can protect your brain from the effects of oxidative stress, however, by regularly performing aerobic exercise. Besides the aerobic training, strength training is important also. For a recent study, researchers followed 1000 subjects, age 54 to 100, who were dementia free. The researchers followed these subjects for 4 years and assessed the strength of the subjects in nine major muscle groups. The results were incredible. Those who ranked in the top 10% for strength were 61% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those in the bottom 10%.
Do you need more convincing about the importance of exercise? Well, in a 2008 study published in the journal Neurology, researchers measured the midsections of 6,500 adults in middle age during the 1960s and 1970s and then followed up with them 36 years later. The people who had the largest midsections in their 40s were three times more likely to have developed dementia when compared to those with the least amount of fat around the middle.
In the aging of a normal brain, brain function will decline due to blockages of bloody supply, the loss of neuronal connections and a decline in nerve-signaling chemicals. It had been believed that an aging brain was incapable of generating new brain cells. But that is not actually the case as shown by studies conducted by Fred Gage, PhD and colleagues at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Theses studies show that with more physical exercise, you can actually grow your brain cells more, have your brain cells live longer and that your brain cells can better connect with other cells. If you were to walk briskly for 40 minutes four time each week, you would increase the flow of blood to the regions of your brain that can grow new brain cells. Dr. Gage has concluded that much of the brain’s decline that we believe is inevitable because of the aging process is really a result of not getting enough exercise.
So the next time you go to pick up your prescription at Walgreen’s I hope that you are inspired by this research to park at the very last spot in the parking lot away from the door and walk in to pick up your medication. And, maybe if you keep up the exercise mindset, you may not even need that prescription one day!

How To Make Dating Fun And Simple
By Tracy Wells
If you find yourself going on a number of first dates that don’t lead to second and third dates, you may want to consider whether you hold incorrect beliefs about dating that are limiting your dating success. There are a number of myths about dating that reflect outdated beliefs about relationships. Let’s consider some of the more common myths, and then compare them with the reality.
Myth: People who talk about themselves on a date will come across as arrogant and narcissistic.
Reality: You have to talk about yourself, how else is your date supposed to get to know you? You don’t want to monopolize the conversation and talk about nothing but yourself, but including information about you is a crucial part of making a good first impression.
Don’t worry about seeming like you are focused on yourself. You can prevent issues with this if you ask your date questions about themselves as well. This also signals to them that you are interested in getting to know them better.
Myth: Being friends with someone first makes it easier to start a successful relationship.
Reality: When people are friends, they are relaxed around each other and interact easily. You’d think this would help a relationship, but in fact it can make it harder to form a romantic interest in someone. Romance is helped along by a little mystery, a sense of discovery, and some nervous anticipation. Dating your old friend can seem far too familiar for that delicious uncertainty to develop.
Myth: When you are out on a date, order a salad. This shows your date that you take care of yourself.
Reality: If you order the salad, but you wanted to steak, you are not being honest with your date about who you are. Better to let them see more of the ‘real you’ than to hide behind a false front of self-denial.
Your date may also think you are being fake if you order a salad. They may think that you are trying to impress them. Worse, they may wonder if you are so controlled and choosy and picky about other areas of life, if you show that you are very concerned and controlled about your diet even on a date.
